How to Add the 2020 Color of the Year To Your Home
Hi everyone! Thought I would take a break from vacation planning and focus on one of my other passions today – home design and decor! Since it’s still the beginning of the year, I’m excited to kick us off with some tips I came up with recently over at Nikou Design Inc. on how to incorporate this year’s colour of the year into your homes!
Pantone announced the 2020 colour of the year as “Classic Blue”. I couldn’t be happier or more excited because it just so happens to be my favourite colour as well! Blue is classic, timeless, calming, peaceful and tranquil. It’s also very versatile and I consider it the new neutral we’ve all been waiting for. You can go very traditional, rustic, modern and even contemporary with it – it all depends on how you decide to use it! Here are some ways you can update your home with this year’s colour of the year – Blue!
Paint colour
A great way to update a room is with a fresh coat of paint and blue is a great accent colour that you can use just about anywhere in the house. It especially works well on an accent wall in a living room, family room, dining room and bedroom. You can also use blue as the main colour of a room depending on a few factors like the size and type of room. An all blue family room or office can look very rich and luxe.
Décor Update
An easy and fairly inexpensive way to inject some blue into your home is to add new blue décor and accessories to your living space. You can add in new blue throw pillows, a throw and vases to your living room, family room or bedroom. Or for a bigger change you can swap out a rug, drapes or table lamps for bolder blue ones. Another idea is to add a large piece of art featuring blue colours into your living room or dining room. If you don’t want to spend a lot but still want to make a colourful update that you can always change later without feeling guilty, head over to your local Home Sense for some deals on blue décor.
Furniture
If you want to make more of a statement with this year’s colour of the year, consider updating a larger piece of furniture in blue! You can try adding in a dark blue sofa or sectional to your living area. Or if that’s a bit too blue, you can add more colour with accent pieces like a blue accent chair, blue side tables or even bigger a blue sideboard in your dining room. A dark blue headboard in your bedroom is another classic yet luxe update .
Kitchen
If you’re renovating your kitchen this year, you can go bold and select blue cabinetry. They look great with white countertops and gold hardware or even a dark black luxurious countertop. Another economical option if your cabinets are in good shape and you like the style and layout of your kitchen is to have them professionally painted in blue.
If you’re not sure you can commit to an entire kitchen of blue cabinetry, I also love the look of a two-toned kitchen. You could do classic white cabinets throughout and then add in a bold blue island in the middle. It’ll be functional but also act as a beautiful piece of furniture too!
Bathroom
Blue is not only classic but makes me think “clean” so it only makes sense that it’s also the perfect colour to use when updating a bathroom. You can go big with blue and opt for a blue vanity or possibly select blue tiles for your space. Or if you just want to add in a little blue depending on the design you can add it in as an accent colour. You can add in a small shower niche tiled in blue or simply add in blue linens and a blue shower curtain to a clean white bathroom.
As I said I love blue but you don’t need to make all of these changes all at once. You can give your home a fresh new look by just picking a couple. There are so many different ways to incorporate a little or a lot of blue into your home – just find something that works for you. I’ve already got some ideas on how we’re going to incorporate blue into our home and some plans on how we’re going to inject some blue into some of our upcoming projects over at Nikou Design Inc!
